Occasionally a so-called 'fad' will force its way, kicking and screaming from the underground and into the mainstream, only to become too cool for its own good and disappear again. And just as occasionally, something will sashay and wiggle into the consciousness of the public, and never leave. Try to look away if you must, but evenutally you WILL stop ignoring BurlesqueLa Vie has spent many an evening in the company of betassled, betwitching beauties, and emerged with more than a touch of sequin-blindness, all too hungry for more. And it's not just me. Burlesque audiences are among the most diverse in London. There's the married couple, looking for an innocent thrill. The city boys, who could have sworn they were going to a strip-joint but somehow took a wrong turning and find themselves unable to leave. There's the hip young things in the corner, and of course the dancers themselves. Like exotic birds they strut the stage, here a twirl, there a feather, everywhere a glimpse of flesh. But what is the best place to see these creatures in their natural habitat? Je vais vous dire la verite...
Volupte - Featuring Afternoon Tease - for those discerning characters who like finger sandwiches with their nipple pasties.
Cellardoor - Converted underground toilet, one time hang-out for Oscar Wilde according to urban legend. Old school meets modern - the dancers and decor arer younger, the clientele are taking snuff!
Bethnal Green Working Men's Club - home of the Double R Club. Lynchian Burlesque! As the name suggests, it is dark, grisly and uncommonly exciting. Also home to the Tournament of Tease, Goodtime Mama JoJo and her girls rock it regular - be quick though as tickets sell out like the Dickens...
So that's cake and gorgeous naked ladies so far...shaping up to be quite a Guide methinks! Mwah xx
